Coming off one of the biggest wins of his career, Lance Haidet was hoping for good things at the World Cup Waterloo this past weekend. However, with just three days to recover from his win at RenoCross, he knew he would be cutting it close. "I felt like I was able to recover fairly well after Reno," said Lance. "Racing Wednesday night followed by a travel day without a whole lot of sleep had me feeling pretty tired on Friday, and even a bit during Saturday’s pre-ride. On Sunday I felt rested enough, but my body was pretty tight and restricted after Reno."
Lance started on the 5th row, but was able to work is way up to the top 20 within a couple of laps. "I felt pretty solid riding up there, and never really felt in distress until my back started to go. The top 20 is definitely where I want to be at the World Cup level."
While pre-riding the course on Saturday Lance knew his back and right hip were out of alignment; an issue he deals with from time to time. "When the race started I felt pretty good and wasn’t having much of an issue until around lap three. Once my back and hips started to tighten up I began struggling to produce power and honestly even my bike handling started to suffer. I’m not exactly sure what causes it, but when it's bad my whole body goes into survival mode. It’s a pretty weird feeling." said Lance.
Lance would finish 37th on the day.
"Hey, it happens. Somedays you feel good and other days you don't," stated Lance. "I plan to see a massage therapist, and do quite a bit of foam rolling, stretching and yoga this week. In addition, I’ll do lots of core work and maybe even a day or two in the gym to try to get all of the core muscles working properly so that I can light it up this weekend!"
Joining Lance and team mechanic James Sullivan will be teammate Laurel Rathbun. She has recently been finishing her collegiate bike racing career with Marian University, but will be competing this Friday evening in Iowa City. Her Marian team recently won the gold in the team pursuit at Collegiate Track Nationals in Colorado Springs!
